Pioneers and Masters of Musical Nationalism

During the first nineteenth century, while America (the “New World”) was producing politically and socially, an excellent movement of nationalism started out in Europe. Due to the French Revolution and its own ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity, the masses of European countries strove for cultural autonomy through nationhood. Two categories of peoples, those that sought independence just like the Hungarians and Irish, and the ones who sought unification under a common language just like the Germans and Italians, emerged and used various tools as a way of personal­expression. As the creative period of romanticism began, music commenced to perform a pivotal purpose in reflecting the sentiment of nationalist peoples and rendering national identity. In some instances, music even stirred the general public to violent political uprising! Three key element musical functions by three nationalist composers of separate institutions characterize the motion of musical nationalism effectively.

The basis of the intensive musical school of Russian nationalism is related to Mikhail Glinka, a composer from the northwestern Russian village of Novospasskoye.
